Elton John loves American roots music, including country, so perhaps it’s no surprise that the pop-rock legend has signed on to guest star on ABC’s country-music drama Nashville.
Elton will play himself on the May 18 episode of the series, and will perform with the character Gunnar Scott, who’s an up-and-coming singer/songwriter portrayed by Sam Palladio. The episode will be the next-to-last one of this current season. Another star from the rock world, Aerosmith‘s Steven Tyler, made a guest appearance on the first episode of Nashville’s current season.
As for how the show managed to land a legendary performer like Elton for a guest spot, well, that’s simple. His producer, T-Bone Burnett, is married to Callie Khouri, the creator of Nashville.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that John’s last appearance on a scripted series came in 2013, as part of Lady Gaga‘s ABC Christmas special.
